Why Join us on a Invertebrate workshop?
The program transforms a standard hill walk into an hands-on scientific field session, focusing on learning practical field techniques, contributing to UK citizen science, and understanding the critical ecological roles of insects across moorland, woodland, and aquatic mountain habitats.
Step into the hidden world of entomology for a detailed look at the different invertebrates found in multiple UK habitats. This full-day workshop is designed for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the natural world, learn observation techniques, and even become active citizen scientists!
You will spend the day learning practical, non-destructive sampling methods. The specific techniques we use will depend on the environment, ranging from sweep netting on the heather moorland to collect and identify invertebrates in the vegetation, responsible kick-sampling in clear mountain streams to survey aquatic invertebrates, or utilizing other specialized methods suitable for lowland habitats (like pitfall trapping) or forest areas (such as beating trays or light trapping). Our expert tutor will focus on teaching you the basics of identification, focusing on helping you to identify invertebrate orders- like the differences between beetles and bugs, or the difference between flies and bees. In addition, you’ll learn how to keep a field notebook, and the information you need to note down to make accurate observations. This will often include sketching and photographs, as well as information such as grid references.

Safe handling of specimens.
Practical experience in various sampling methods, such as kick-sampling, sweep netting, light trapping and more (habitat and weather dependant).
Creating a field notebook.
📚 Identification & Ecology
A deep dive into the anatomy and classification of key UK invertebrate orders.
Focus on bioindicators which indicate the health of the environment being sampled.
